Farewell to a Longtime and Faithful NicA Servant

Dear Nicotine Anonymous Member,

This is a sad moment to share with you all, as one of our dedicated servants of Nicotine Anonymous, Joe S, passed away on Friday, April 1, 2011.

The current Treasurer of Nicotine Anonymous and long-time colleague shares the following remembrance:

Many of you knew Joe well through his years of dedicated service. I know I did. He was at my first meeting of NicA when I walked through the doors over 12 years ago, and he helped me start my journey of recovery. He sure had a dry sense of humor and would make me laugh and forget my pain.

Joe was very service oriented through the years. He was heavily involved with our local intergroup (SCINA) as treasurer, worked on outreach, served on panels, was the treasurer of the World Services board in 2000, and ran for chair in 2003, losing to a good fellow member.

He went on to be the World Services fulfillment officer and office manager through early 2011. He participated in annual conferences through the years and attended quarterly board meetings until his health began to fail. One of Joe's trademarks was a recurring no vote when it was obvious the issue in question was going to pass. It was just his thing to do.

Joe did much for our fellowship. I hope you all remember him well and pray for his family and the loved ones he leaves behind. I know I will miss him.

Gary M.
