MINUTES of SCINA Meeting - May 20, 2018

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA INTERGROUP OF NICOTINE ANONYMOUS (SCINA)

INTRODUCTIONS:  Angie B. called the meeting to order at 10:08 am with the Serenity Prayer followed by introductions.

WAS YOUR MEETING REPRESENTED? Quorum was met with 9 members in attendance.  The following meetings were represented (some members might represent more than one meeting):  Costa Mesa 76, Fullerton 84, Sherman Oaks 185, Silverlake 229, Long Beach 231, and San Diego 284.

TRADITIONS: Tradition #5, “Each group has but one primary purpose - to carry its message to the Nicotine addict who still suffers.” was read.

TREASURER REPORT:  Beginning balance $617.50, plus incoming 7th tradition to SCINA $16.00 equals $633.50.  Also received checks for retreat (Angela $185.00 and Bill H $285.00 equals $470.00).  This is set aside for the Retreat.  May Expenses: $500 Retreat deposit for the caterer, Grasshopper $32.34 and Registrar expense of $15.82 and Secretary expense of $30.00 is a total expense of $578.16. The Balance of $633.50 minus expenses of $578.16 equals $55.34 which is our beginning balance into June (our actual balance is $3,055.34, which includes $3,000 that Stephen donated to avoid the $18/month bank fee).

REGISTRAR REPORT:   No changes were made on the Administration List.  No Meeting information was updated, and no meetings were added or removed.  All Meetings have USPS contact through their Secretary, their Representative, or email. No H&I Listings were updated, or removed.  American Cancer Society, Pasadena, was removed due to undeliverable address.  42 envelopes were addressed, and 100 Directories were printed.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

HOSPITALS AND INSTITUTIONS:  Angela P. reports 2 people have offered to help with panel requests.  For more information or to be of service, please call Angela P. at (949) 302-8465.  Lucero Marquez of Long Beach Dept of Health & Human Services, Tobacco Education Program contacted me about adding the SCINA website and phone number to their flyers.  A motion was made, and approved unanimously, to donate monthly $4 of our literature (8 ea. of Introducing Nicotine Anonymous and Facing the Fatal Attraction) to them to be delivered by George O. who kindly agreed.

COMMUNICATIONS:  The phone lines are running smoothly.  No concerns at this time.

LITERATURE:  Brian K will meet with Halli this week to transfer the name on the Union Bank account.  The Northern California Intergroup has offered to sell chips to any member of Nicotine Anonymous.  For more information, please visit their website at:  http://www.nica-norcal.org/.  Their order form is with this link:  http://www.nica-norcal.org/chips-order-form.pdf.

WORLD SERVICES:   At the Nicotine Anonymous World Conference last month, there was a vote to continue the item to make changes to The Promises, so no changes have been made.  Allowing all members and delegates to vote was discussed.  This would require a change to the bylaws to make the change.  The NAWS Board is looking at how to open the conference remotely via computer (Web Ex or similar).  Grati-Grams were used as a fundraiser at the World Conference.

EVENTS:  The 19th annual SCINA Joshua Tree Retreat is in two weeks: June 8-10, 2018.  Nine people have paid, seven have RSVPed with a promise to pay.  We need at least nine more people to break even. Reminder: If you pay with credit card via PayPal, add $5 to cover the fee and email us as the system does not auto-notify.  We are hoping to deposit all checks before that weekend, as Bill is no longer treasurer. See flyer for details. Questions? Call Jane H. (442) 324-2373 or Bill H. (818) 800-3449.   George R. reserved Rush Park in Rossmore for our annual Picnic in September.  The annual picnic is Sunday, September 16.

NEW MEETINGS:  There are no new meetings.

PUBLIC OUTREACH:  No updates.

SPEAKERS LIST: Invite a speaker to your meeting.  Call (949) 302-8465 for a list.

BYLAWS:  No report.

SAN DIEGO OUTREACH AD HOC COMMITTEE:  San Diego has one meeting.  About 8 people usually attend.  This group has reached out to Kaiser and Sharp Second Breath to help do outreach for our program.  They have a San Diego hotline, and it’s been in existence for 15 years.  They receive a few calls every month.  The San Diego group also gets a few requests for information from SCINA’s 800 number every month.

WORLD CONFERENCE AD HOC COMMITTEE:  Save The Date flyer was created and brought to the World Conference.  Angie B., our current Chair of SCINA, was elected Secretary-Elect of NAWS.  Congratulations, Angie!  It was brought to our attention that the 2019 World Conference might have to be in early May, possibly May 3-5, 2019.  Passover is the last weekend in April, and this might make it so some members can’t attend.  We want to be as inclusive as possible.  This committee meets at 11:30 am on the 3rd Sunday every month immediately following SCINA’s Regular Monthly Meeting.  We need your help in planning the conference.  Please contact the Chair of the World Conference Ad Hoc Committee, John D., at johndarnell8@gmail.com or by phone at (818) 618-1501.

Director of Web Operations:   No report.

OLD BUSINESS:  Chad from NAWS offered to host a Web Ex training for SCINA.  He is available next weekend, but we need to find a date and time where all interested can meet at the same time.  The webmaster presented to the intergroup some information on if we might want to update the website to a different host (wordpress.com) or at least transferring the domain hosting to the same host as our website - at Squarespace.

NEW BUSINESS:  No new business.

BIRTHDAYS:  William (35 years), Judi M. (7 years).

SECRETARY REPORT:  Motion was made and approved for this month’s minutes.

CLOSING PRAYER:  George O. led us in the Serenity Prayer at 11:25 AM.
