We discussed canceling the @scina.org email addresses and use gmail. It costs about $60/year to use the GoDaddy @scina.org domain email addresses.  Gmail is free and we’re able to use Google Drive which has a lot of benefits. We can save files together in the Google Drive like PDFs, and of course the Minutes.  John D already started using scinasecretary@gmail.com.  Here’s some other email address ideas:  scinaregistrar@gmail.com, scinatreasurer@gmail.com, scinainfo@gmail.com, etc.  If a different person becomes Registrar for example then that person can just get the login info and start their new role.  No names attached. It is easy to add an email account to our phones. For example, John D has his personal email and the scinasecretary@gmail.com on his phone’s email app.  When he replies it shows what email address is responding.  Very easy. If a future SCINA group wants to change it something like @scina.org (a paid service), then fine, but this might be the best thing for now.  John D. will look into how we can use these but still keep our anonymity. When a new Gmail account is created, it might reference the person who created.

LITERATURE:  $38 worth of Chips and Literature were purchased and delivered to the Friday night meeting Secretary.  $670.54 is in the balance of the bank account for literature. Sales from the World Conference is being counted, but no report yet.  We need someone to take over SCINA Literature. Please consult your Higher Power, and if interested, please contact George O. at (562) 310-0874 or come to one of our Intergroup meetings.

WORLD SERVICES:  New officers were elected this year during the Nicotine Anonymous World Conference.  Congratulations to Bill H. for becoming Chair-Elect of World Services! And, congratulations to Angie for becoming Secretary-Active!  Thank you to everyone who helped plan for the Nicotine Anonymous 2019 World Conference. It was held in Fullerton, CA on May 3-5, 2019.  The last time Southern California hosted the World Conference was in 2013 in Long Beach, CA. The 2020 Nicotine Anonymous World Conference will be in Lancaster, PA.  The Treasurer report for the 2019 World Conference is in progress. Suggestions for next conference: chat room/shared file for people who want to share hotel rooms and transportation to and from hotel, Serenity Shredder, link registration form with Paypal, ask members what they want their name badge to say (city, state, meeting, intergroup, service position, and what else?).

EVENTS:  The 2019 SCINA Joshua Tree Retreat will be July 12-14, 2019.  This is the 20th anniversary of the retreat! Flyers have been sent via email and mail from our distribution list the past two months.  Six people have registered so far. There is still plenty of room, but register soon before it fills up. Chips and literature will be available for sale at the retreat.

For the meeting/elections/picnic in Sept, George R. reserved a spot at the Cheviot Hills Recreation Center in Los Angeles for $119.  The Annual Picnic is Sunday, September 15, 2019.

We are not able to have the annual Marathon Meetings event in November at the same location.  Joseph can’t be there the whole day, and the church won’t let us have it there unless a member of their church is present.  The Long Beach Saturday morning meeting (meeting #231) asked the owner of their location if they could do it. They will get back to us soon.  Joseph is looking for other locations too. Discussion was had to shorten the hours for this event, and to move to another location. The event will be held Saturday, November 23, 2019.

NEW MEETINGS:  No new meetings.

WORLD SERVICES:  NAWS is looking for members with experience vaping and what they did or did not get out of using it.  They want to make a piece of literature dealing with vaping.  Pass this information on to groups and if anyone feels like writing to NAWS send info to Checko at LiteratureCoordinator@nicotine-anonymous.org.  Conference committees will mostly likely be held instead of workshops at the World Conference.  This will be decided at the next NAWS board meeting.  The previous schedule was doing 3 workshops at the same time, and then doing another 3 workshops during the next block of time at each world conference.  Two committees that have confirmed to meet at the world conference will be the Service Structure and Outreach Committees.  The Literature and International Committees plan to meet soon to discuss whether they will have meetings at the conference.  In the past, there hasn’t been many recommendations from Committees that the delegates can vote on.  The votes have generally been to elect officers.  The International Committee might meet at the conference to discuss what work they do.  For example, they want more involvement from other countries, help with translations, help to get more 7th tradition donations from outside the United States, and others.

WORLD SERVICES:  NAWS Service Structure Committee met last week, and they talked about having the World Conference once every three years.  They are vetting this at their meetings.  They are also discussing the agendas for the conference, because there’s not enough time to get things done at the conference.  Also, every delegate would be part of a committee during the conference and beforehand.  The Service Structure Committee meets on the 1st Monday of the Month at 8 pm Eastern Time.  Call Jeff for details (760) 401-6503.

PUBLIC OUTREACH:  Long Beach Public Health agency wants our input for their program on how to address stopping the use of nicotine, and what information we can provide to help.  That will be in January or February.  There might be a focus group of numerous individuals and organizations that will help.  NAWS has been working on a list of public agencies that they could send information about new meetings, and other things, but it’s moving slow.  They have six agencies so far.  NAWS will send them something once per month.  NAWS needs help with this.  Orange Coast College invited Nicotine Anonymous to their Health Fair on short notice.  John D. and Angela P. were able to attend and spoke to about 50 students and teachers about the program and distributed meeting lists, business cards, and some of the pamphlets from Angela’s meeting.  Motion was made and approved to reimburse meeting #76 (Costa Mesa) for $10 worth of pamphlets.  They donated their own pamphlets to be able to have them at Orange Coast College.   If anyone is willing to take on or share the Public Outreach position, please contact John D. at (818) 618-1501.  We need more help with outreach.  Follow us at www.facebook\Southern_California_Intergroup_of_Nicotine_Anonymous and on Twitter @QuitNowLA.

Same with literature.  Italy has a translation of The Book-Nicotine Anonymous. Word is getting out slowly but surely. NAWS looking for members to sign up for "The Gift of Gratitude" More and more members have been signing up since its inception.  Approximately 35 people are signed up across the fellowship as of now.  Pamphlets on Sponsorship are still in the works as well as making a pamphlet dealing with the E-cigarettes.  Though it's on a controversial stalemate.  If anyone wants a copy of the July minutes, Gary can forward them to you.

The Service Structure Committee meeting was Monday, September 11.  Next month, remote participation will be set up in preparation for the World Conference in 2019.  There will be a small registration fee for remote participants and this will support the cost of remoting conferencing.  Zoom will most likely be the service used instead of WebEx.  Zoom is being tested now.  The NAWS Outreach Committee was Wednesday, September 13.  A major item on this agenda was Gratitude Month in November.

SAN DIEGO OUTREACH AD HOC COMMITTEE:  No report.

WORLD CONFERENCE AD HOC COMMITTEE:  Save The Date flyer was created and will be brought to the World Conference.  This committee meets at 11:30 am on the 3rd Sunday every month immediately following SCINA’s Regular Monthly Meeting.  We need your help in planning the conference. Please contact the Chair of the World Conference Ad Hoc Committee, John D., at johndarnell8@gmail.com or by phone at (818) 618-1501.

Director of Web Operations:   SCINA renewed the domain name with godaddy.com for five years.  Last month we had 191 unique visitors to the website - that was a 9.8% increase from the previous month, with 321 unique page views. Our most popular page last month was the Meeting list page. Last month we had at least one visit on every page of the website.  The webpage is a good source of outreach and information for members and those looking for information on quitting nicotine. The Website - which is separate from the domain - is due to renew on June 20, 2018. The Renewal Rate for that for one year is $192.00.

OLD BUSINESS:  SCINA will contact NAWS to set up ability to use their WebEx.

NEW BUSINESS:  The webmaster presented to the intergroup some information on if we might want to update the website to a different host (wordpress.com) or at least transferring the domain hosting to the same host as our website - at Squarespace.

BIRTHDAYS:  Jeff M. (9 years),  Belated for Brian K (10 years in Feb.), George O. (16 years), Robert (19 years), Kay M. (9 years)

MINUTES - March 18, 2018

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA INTERGROUP OF NICOTINE ANONYMOUS (SCINA)

INTRODUCTIONS:  Angie B. called the meeting to order at 10:00 am with the Serenity Prayer followed by introductions.

WAS YOUR MEETING REPRESENTED? Quorum was met with 7 members in attendance.  The following meetings were represented (some members might represent more than one meeting):  Costa Mesa 76, Fullerton 84, Long Beach 12, Long Beach 231, Bellflower 250, Glendale 241.

TRADITIONS: Tradition #3, “The only requirement for Nicotine Anonymous membership is a desire to stop using nicotine.” was read.

TREASURER REPORT:  Beginning balance is $366.53.  INCOMING donations from Long Beach #12 $150.00, Long Beach #231 $80.00, Costa Mesa #76 $15, Bellflower #250 $100.00.  7th tradition for SCINA’s February’s meeting was $40.00.  Total incoming is $385.00.  When added to our beginning balance, the new balance is $751.53.  EXPENSES are Grasshopper telephone service $31.91, bank fee $3.00, Registrar expense $26.38, and Secretary’s Expense $17.33.  TOTAL EXPENSES are $79.02.  $751.53 balance minus expenses of $79.02 equals an ending balance of $672.51.  This report is correct but is not balancing.  Has to do with checks deposited and reporting monthly checks incorrectly. The bank balance shows us with a balance of $792.63 and that will be our beginning balance for next month. There is a discrepancy in our favor of $108.76.  So with the $3000 that Stephen donated to avoid the $18 bank fee our true balance is $3766.27.  Our savings account has a balance of $500.13.

REGISTRAR REPORT:   On the Administration List, Brian K. (not our Director of Web Operations)  has accepted the Literature and Chips Chair.  No Meeting information was updated, and no meetings were added or removed.  All Meetings have USPS contact through their Secretary, their Representative, or email. No H&I Listings were updated, added, or removed.  43 envelopes were addressed, and 175 Directories were printed.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

HOSPITALS AND INSTITUTIONS:  Angela P. reports no response from the fellowship on her request for volunteers for panels.  For more information, please call Angela P. at (949) 302-8465.

COMMUNICATIONS:  The phone lines are running smoothly.  No concerns at this time.

LITERATURE:  No report, but chips and literature will be available at every meeting unless the Literature person has an unexpected absence.

WORLD SERVICES:  The Nicotine Anonymous World Conference will be held in New York from April 20-22, 2018.  See our website for more information:  www.scina.org.  The following delegates to represent SCINA at the world conference are:  Angie B., JudiAh D., Rodger F., George O., Bill H., and Jeff M.  We are allowed to have up to seven delegates to represent SCINA at the world conference.  There is room for one more delegate.  If you are attending, and would like to be a delegate, please let Gary M. know at garynica@att.net.

Gift of Gratitude - Give $10 a month to Nicotine Anonymous World Services and get a free Seven minutes subscription in the mail.  Your funds will also help World Services with their expenses.  The proposed revision of Our Promises will be presented at this year’s World Conference and there might be a vote to approve them.  The Spanish Version of Nicotine Anonymous’, The Book, is now available to purchase online.  Seven minutes is looking for articles from members about sponsorship.  NAWS is looking for someone to take over as Outreach Coordinator.

EVENTS:  The annual Joshua Tree Retreat will be held June 8-10, 2018.  Bill H. and Jane H. are the event co-chairs.  Flyer was emailed and mailed with last month’s minutes.  Please RSVP soon.  Every year, there are a few members who RSVP and pay at the last minute.  This makes it very difficult for the event planners to set up the event.

NEW MEETINGS:  There are no new meetings.

PUBLIC OUTREACH:  No update.

SPEAKERS LIST: Invite a speaker to your meeting. Call (949) 302-8465 for a list.

BYLAWS:  No report.

SAN DIEGO OUTREACH AD HOC COMMITTEE:  No report.

WORLD CONFERENCE AD HOC COMMITTEE:  This committee held an in-person meeting on Sunday, February 18.  Our committee is working on a “Save The Date” flyer and looking for a hotel location.  The theme of the 2019 World Conference will be “Surfing Into Serenity”.  The committee always meets at 11:30 am on the 3rd Sunday every month immediately following SCINA’s Regular Monthly Meeting.  We need your help in planning the conference.  Please contact the Chair of the World Conference Ad Hoc Committee, John D., at johndarnell8@gmail.com or by phone at (818) 618-1501.

Director of Web Operations:  No report.

OLD BUSINESS:  No old business.

NEW BUSINESS:  SCINA would like to have the ability for members to call in to SCINA’s Regular Meeting every month.  We will do research on the cost of a conference call phone, and VOIP phone service (internet phone service), so we can have the ability of members to call in case they cannot attend in-person.  We do not get cell reception in the room where we have our meetings at White Memorial Medical Center so we must use VOIP phone service.  Motion was made to approve the purchase of a conference call phone for up to $100.  It did not pass.

BIRTHDAYS:  John D. (5 years), Angela P. (14 years), Robb T. (7 years).

SECRETARY REPORT:  Motion was made and approved for this month’s minutes.

CLOSING PRAYER:  George O. led us in the Serenity Prayer at 11:17 AM.
